Formula Feeding and how we feed our babies isn’t usually a topic I talk about but I am excited to tell my own personal story with formula feeding and the reason why I chose not to breastfeed. It starts on December 29th, 2010 when my son Dylan was born, he was induced at 42 weeks, he wanted to stay in my tummy for as long as possible! The moment he was born I had plans to breastfeed, I tried to get him to latch on but I have been blessed with very large breasts and it wasn’t happening right away. Within a few hours, Dylan was whisked off by helicopter to another hospital where he had to undergo an operation for a testicular torsion, I didn’t have that much time with him and I had no breast milk coming in so he was given formula whilst he recovered at the other hospital for 3 days.
When I got him home I tried using a breast pump but really didn’t produce much milk, I continued to try and express more but my husband who was on leave from deployment at the time had to go back and I was on my own for the next 7 months. I ended up throwing in the towel and using baby formula, I felt guilty at first but my son grew up into a very strong toddler and I knew I had made the right decision for both us.
When my daughter was born 2 years later, I tried pumping but I ended up with very bad mastitis so I switched to formula feeding. With my third, I formula fed right away, I was working full time, moving into a new home and had multiple projects going on at that time. It’s what was best for our lifestyle and I don’t regret my decision. One thing I chose to do was switch to Organic formula, my youngest spit up a lot and I wanted to try something that might be a little more gentle on his tummy. My children are happy and fed and that’s what’s important!
