Unleash your creativity! How design and crafts can help with decorating

August 7, 2018      Leave a Comment

Being arty and handy at craft work can be useful in many different aspects of life. From repairing the curtains to sewing up a hole in a dress, these skills are useful all over the course of the day. The same goes for home decor: from dressing your windows to developing a cohesive and appropriate paint color palette, being artistic is a real boon. This article will look at three distinct but important ways in which being a little bit creative can go a long way when the annual decorating job list is devised.

Wall painting

Quite possibly the most important part of decorating is painting, and there’s no escaping the fact that the color and texture of a room’s walls have a profound effect on the success of the rest of the room’s design. The key arts and crafts skill of complementary color identification is handy here: pairing cream with light yellow, for example, can create a mellow look, while a dash of green or even red can create a striking and atmospheric effect. There are infinite pairs (and trios) of colors available, especially when feature walls are used – and possessing a finely-tuned eye for color means that you’ll get it right every time.

Window dressing

Arty people never fail to notice a beautifully-dressed window – and whether it’s ornaments on the sill or a pair of thick, rich curtains being used, the effects of a well-dressed window are superb. But while traditional window dressing techniques like these are useful, they’re not the only options on offer. Modern shutters also look great, and the ease with which they can be opened and closed mean they can strike a great balance between utility and aesthetic appeal.

Soft furnishings

While art skills are handy to have for window dressing, wall painting and more, it’s when it comes to soft furnishings that an aptitude for crafts can really come into its own. When you’re capable of sewing, knitting and more, it’s possible to add soft furnishings to everywhere from the bedroom to the reception room. Rather than spending time and money buying a mass-produced cushion cover from a homeware store, for example, why not make one yourself? Or if you’d like to add a unique decorative touch to a pillowcase, a needle and thread can do the trick. Not only does this sort of furnishing philosophy give you the chance to save cash, it also means you can furnish your home in a way that suits you perfectly.

Decorating a room or a whole home can seem tough on the face of it, but it’s much easier if you enjoy the advantages of an artistic eye and have some craft skills. From finding perfect colors to paint the walls with to arranging your windows in a way that catches the eye of passers-by, anyone with an arty side can use decorating as a way to unleash their creative potential.
